Frequently Asked Questions
Q. My door won't open. It may try to lift but stops or slides back down. What should I look for?
A. Look on the bar that runs horizontally above the door. If you have a broken spring there will be a gap in the the coil.
Springs are dangerous and should only be repaired by a professional. Stop using the door immediately until the spring
has been replaced to avoid personal injury or damage to the door or opener.
A. Check the bottom of your door. If there is water that has frozen under the door, your door may be frozen to the ground. Free the
the door before using your opener to avoid damage to the door or opener.
Q. My spring doesn't seem to last very long. Why?
A. Springs are gauged from the factory by cycles (one trip up and down). If you use the door as the main entry to your home, you will use
more cycles in a shorter period of time.
Q. My opener lifts the door but when it comes down, it slams down hard.
A. Check to see if you have a broken spring. Sometimes the opener can lift the door but you risk damage to the door, opener, or personal
injury by continuing to use the door with a broken spring. Gears or the carriage could also be stripped.
Q. My door is crooked. What happened?
A. A cable may have come off the drum. If the door came down on something it could cause the cable to pop off or the cable may have
broken. Sometimes a cable comes off when a spring breaks. Cables are under tension and should only be replaced by a professional.
Q. My opener goes up ok but only closes if I hold the button.
A. Check your infra-reds to see if each side is on and has a solid beam. If it is blinking it may be out of alignment and you may be able to
move the box to get a solid beam. Clean the lenses off to be sure there is no dust or spider webs on them. If the light is out on one
side you may be able to unplug the unit for several minutes, then plug back in. This may reset the unit. If none of this works you may
need a part(s).
Q. My transmitter quit working.
A. Check your battery. If you replaced the battery and it still doesn't work you may need to reset the transmitter to the opener. For
Genie units (round top transmitter), push the learn code button (by the light bulb) then push your hand transmitter 3 times. For
Liftmaster, push the learn code button, then hold the transmitter button down until unit clicks and light blinks. If you have more
than 1 transmitter and they all quit at the same time, you may have a bad receiver or circuit board. (This does not apply to older units.)
Q. When I push the wall button or the transmitter, the door goes up. When I push it again the opener tries to go up again.
A. You may have a bad circuit board. Storms or power outages/surges can damage the boards.
Q. My opener goes up o.k. but bangs into the motor head instead of stopping when it gets to the top.
A. You may have a bad limit switch. Push the button before it hits the motor head until it is repaired or you may damage the circuit board.
